Two-thousand, three-hundred and seventy years ago, in Book seven of his Republic, Plato gave us the allegory of the cave.

In the cave were a captive people whose only knowledge of the world was their understanding of shadows they saw on the wall of their cave. These shadows came from a puppet show that mocked reality. In their ignorance they supposed these shadows and the echoes of their sounds to be the truth.

One of the captives was dragged out of the cave into the sunshine. He was at first blinded by the light, then slowly learned the truths of the real world. He returned to the cave to tell his friends.

Upon first re-entering the cave, he was blinded by the darkness. Seeing his confusion, then hearing his assertions about the falsity of the shadows, the cave dwellers laughed at him and scorned him. They determined never to go from the cave and to kill anyone who tried to lead them out. (Plato had in mind the killing of Socrates.) All great thinkers and observers have encountered cave dwellers. Doctor Quimby's healing work dealt with one problem: false beliefs. These false beliefs--shadows, not Wisdom--he found to be the cause of disease and all problems.

In a later chapter Quimby tells of his experience with the opposition of the cave dwellers of his day.
